Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives say they responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash near 48 Montauk Highway in Amityville on Wednesday night, Sept. 25.

Further investigation revealed that Maria Zatarga-Fagan, 37, of Copiague was attempting to cross the roadway from south to north when she was struck by an eastbound 2018 Jeep Wrangler at approximately 8:35 p.m., according to police.

Zatarga-Fagan was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where she was pronounced dead, police say.

The driver of the Jeep, identified as Michael Nomikos, 42, of West Babylon, was not injured. The Jeep was impounded for a safety check, according to police.
